In accordance with the command of our Lord, the congregation of the Holy Family started its
missionary work in Bharathpur in 1977. It was His Grace the most Rev.Dominic Athade, the
Archbishop of Agra, who had invited us to work there by the recommendation of Rev.Fr.Thomas
Paramudayil. This house which was under the direct administration of the Generalate, was
entrusted to the Marian Province Palakkad on Dec.2,1977. The second convent started in
Baluganj, Agra in 1992.The main Apostolate of our sisters are education, family visits and parish
work. The sisters’ loving presence in parish work, work of mercy and family visits are great
support to the parish and the people around. To work in the new born Syro- Malabar Diocese,
Kalyan , the Bishop Mar Paul Chittilappilly invited Holy Family sisters to start a convent for
family apostolate through education. The convent building and Holy Family convent High School
was constructed and was blessed on 7th January 1991. The fields of apostolate in Ulhasnagar
are education ministry, family visits and parish work. The school is the centre for giving faith
formation, values, conducting retreats, seminars and competitions for teachers and students in
parish level and zonal levels. In 1992, the Archbishop the Most Rev.Cecil D’souza invited the
sisters of Holy Family to collaborate with the fathers of the Diocese to run a school in Aligarh.
Education, family apostolate and parish work are the main apostolate there. In 1993 responding
to the invitation of the Bishop of Rajkot, Mar Gregory Karotemprayil a convent was started in
Bachau, at Kutch District. The main apostolate of our sisters are education , social work and
parish ministry. Our sisters were working in an integrated school where the normal blind and the
physically handicapped children are studying. Sisters were in charge of the hostel of the school.
They give tuition for the hostel children every day. The diocese had adopted five villages after
the earthquake and our sisters were fully engaged in the work of rebuilding them. In the
meantime Bishop of Bareilly Bishop Antony Fernandes invited us to collaborate with Vincentian
Fathers in the remote village of Aonla and we started our work in 1994. The mission was
declared a Region on 25 March 1995. The Marian Mission Region was erected and Sr.Grace
Bastin was appointed as the first Regional Superior. St.Mary’s School Baroli Ahir, Agra in 1996
and Convent in 1998 were established. On 19 July 1997, a mission house was blessed and
inaugurated in the newly bought land and building . In the extraordinary Synaxis the Marian
Mission Region was raised to Mary Matha Vice Province. Sr.Lucy Arickatt was elected as the
first Province on Feb20 1999. Official inauguration was held on 4 th Oct 2000 by Superior
General Rev.Mother Mary Pastor. In 1999, Holy Family Convent and School, Ulhasnagar were
added to Mary Matha Vice Province for the financial support. The second house in Gujarat, Holy
Family Convent, Mundra was established in 2000 and the apostolate started with CMI Fathers.
Holy Family Convent, Satara and Holy Family Convent Solapur were established in 2001 and
2002 respectively in collaboration with MCBS Fathrs in Kalyan Diocese. Another house was
opened in 2001 in Ettawa by the invitation of the Fathers of Ettawah Mission to start a school for
the mentally disabled children. The Vice Province declared as a Province and it was officially
inaugurated on 2 nd October 2009 by the Superior General Mother Prasanna Thattil. Our
mission extended to North East in Guwahati Archdiocese. By the request of Archbishop Thomas
Menamparambil, our sisters were appointed as the administrator and Social worker in
Archbishop’s house from 2010 onwards. Our sisters started working in Diocesan School,
Silchang and continue taking care of the Girls’ Hostel . The Province House Agra was shifted
to the newly constructed building in Jalgaon, Maharashtra in Kalyan Diocese in collaboration
with CMI Fathers in the year 2012. This area is under CMI Chavara Region, Dhule.
Thus the Province is moving forward active with Zeal and enthusiasm to spread the Gospel
values. After Sr.Grace Basin our pioneer Regional Superior, the Provinces Sr.Lucy Arickatt,
Sr.Mary Vattamattom,Sr.Maris Stella, Sr.Blossam John,Sr.Ann Jose and the present Province
Sr. Maris Stella and their team of Councillors and other officials, Local Superiors and members
worked hard to make the Province as it is today. There is a vast development in the field of
Education, Social and Village work, home Mission units and charitable activities. Mary Matha is
constantly under the protection of her Patroness, Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother and Queen.
